The operating temperature range for oven chain oils is high, between +120 °C and +220 °C, but can also reach very high temperatures, exceeding 280 °C, with extreme temperatures reaching 300 °C. High temperature chain oils are the most common lubricants used in most ambient temperature applications . This type of lubrication can also be used at higher temperatures, but there are concerns about reduced fluid viscosity (thinner oil film); increased oil oxidation rates, resulting in varnish and sludge; and oil volatility, which reduces lubrication as the oil evaporates .
Food grade high temperature greases are used in applications where high temperatures are present or where the use of liquids is not possible or appropriate. Greases are typically suspended in a liquid carrier designed to disperse (evaporate) after application of the lubricant or, in the case of oils, disperse (evaporate) solids after penetrating the lubricant's pin area. Food grade high temperature greases provide a lubricated, low drag surface, thereby reducing fatigue, operating temperatures and electrical power consumption.
